Re: ANOTHER DOOMED FORUM
So lets take a serious look at the picture. Barack Obama has shown himself more at odds with his own party than the opposition. He promised a federal minimum wage of $9.50/hr., but has taken no action; today, at $7.25, the US minimum is one of the lowest for workers in industrialized nations. He promised an end to the war in Iraq, but decided to leave 50,000 soldiers as a “token.” He promised to repeal ‘Don’t ask, don’t tell (DADT), yet today his administration continues to oppose lawsuits and judges who have determined DADT is unconstitutional. He has sworn to end tax cuts for the millionaires and billionaires, yet now he sides with the Republicans in championing the rich. He claims he did so as a trade-off for continued unemployment insurance financing; yet he only got a 13-month extension of unemployment funding, while giving up two years of the tax cut gifts for the richest taxpayers. He refused to prosecute murderers, kidnappers and torturers from the previous administration. He gave up on health care in this country by failing to insist upon a public option. He has miscalculated and mismanaged at every step. Democrats everywhere are asking, ‘Didn’t we just elect a more approachable Republican?’
The answer for Democrats in the White Hours today is, ‘what are you going to do?’ They think that the party base has no place else to go. Another massive miscalculation.
Disappointed Democrats do, indeed, have someplace to go. But let’s not be normative in discussing this; let’s be factual. Disappointed Democrats will respond, doing so individually and not collectively. When the leader of a national party says partisans have no place else to go, they go home. Disappointed, but nonetheless you can’t be more disappointed than when party leaders join with the other party. It’s no worse than having lost an election in a one-party contest. Barack Obama won’t lose votes, he’ll lose voters.
Yes, Obama is chasing Democrats from the polls in the next elections. It’s just a fact. It’s not normative. No, there’s no movement saying, ‘Don’t go to the polls.’ There’s just a sentiment saying, ‘Why bother?’ It’s clear that the two-party system, presently constituted, does not meet the demands or needs of the many, many progressive voters. These are the people who shouted along with Obama, “Yes, we can,” only to find that he wouldn’t.
We have two factions on the right, and none on the left. We have two years to remedy this. It is time to begin to mount a challenge to the two parties on the right. It is time to seriously consider a third party…one with focus and energy to do what is right to represent our interests.
